American Cancer Society's 7th Annual Relay

Remember when your birthday was the biggest, best and greatest day of the year? Well  “every day” is the biggest, best and greatest birthday for cancer survivors, their family and friends…March 6 -7, 2010 gather at the Trapp Family Ski Touring Center for the American Cancer Society’s, 7th Annual Relay For Life NordicStyle, the only NordicStyle Relay in the country. Come be part of this historical event by forming a team or joining an existing one as you cross country ski and snowshoe the night away to raise funds to find a cure for “all” cancers. In doing so, future generations will not have to hear the words, “you have cancer” and more… and more… and more…. birthdays will be celebrated! Take one day, one moment in time as we celebrate the biggest, best and greatest birthday of many more to come.

If you have lived in our community for any length of time you may still not know about all of the projects undertaken by the Civilian Conservation Corps in Waterbury and Stowe.  This presentation is a personal collection of old photographs and stories related to ski trails, camping areas, the Waterbury Dam, and many more aspects of the CCC in Vermont.  You will probably be surprised to learn just how much the work of the "C's" is still around but completely overlooked.

Green Mountain Club Winter Education Workshops: Cold Weather Trekking
Learn what to wear and what to bring for a safe and successful winter trip.  We will discuss food, fleece, shells, socks, snowshoes, sweat, hats, handwarmers, hydration, boots, crampons, and long underwear.  This workshop is required for anyone planning to participate in GMC winter trips, unless you have previous winter hiking experience.  If you have never worn crampons, this workshop is for you. Green Mountain Club Backcountry Ski Adventure
We'll hit a trail in the Mount Mansfield area for a backcountry tour on skis. This workshop is designed for those who are comfortable on touring skis and looking to advance their skiing abilities. You should be comfortable with a snowplow on nordic/backcountry skis and transitioning to a tele-turn. Metal edges a must (partial edges okay).  Climbing skins may be necessary. This tour may include a fee if we access backcountry trails via a nordic ski center. Group limit: 8. Distance not to exceed 8 miles or 2,000 feet elevation gain. Ski rating: moderate. Fee: $25. Register by March 1.

3nd Annual Catamount Trail Challenge Race and Tour

Skiers from throughout the East will test their backcountry skills on one of the most famous sections of the 300-mile Catamount Trail on Sunday March 14th. Both competitive and non-competitive skiers will ski from the Trapp Family Touring Center to the Bolton Valley Nordic Center over some of Vermont’s most scenic mountain terrain. Ascending 2300 vertical feet, participants will test their stamina and strength as they climb to the highest point on the Catamount Trail to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From there they will traverse Bolton Mountain and make a hair raising 1300 ft descent to the Bolton Valley Nordic Center. The demanding 17km course is 30% groomed trail and 70% non-groomed.

Sled Dog Activities for Kids and Families - Peace Pups carting and scootering for the young and the young at heart. If you are a dog lover visiting the Stowe area and need to get your dog fix Peace Pups may be just the ticket. Our Siberian Huskies are living examples of how they can be working dogs and pets at the same time. All of our Huskies are well socialized and just love to be petted. Our rides are suitable for all ages and we’ve had guests on our rides as young as two months old and as old as ninety four years old.

 

Umiak Dog-Sledding - Enjoy the peace of Vermont's winter wonderland while enjoying an age-old form of transportation. Our experienced 'mushers' and their teams of Siberian Huskies will share their love of dog sledding with you during the 2-hour adventure. You will learn the history of the sport, have the chance to drive the team and make some new four-footed friends. Our trips are designed to be educational and interactive. Every time out is an opportunity in training and there is something to learn from each adventure. We want you to be a part of our team and feel that you ran the dog team. We encourage as much participation from you that is within your comfort level. This includes preparing the dogs – harnessing – driving the team, treating and watering the dogs or just sitting back and enjoying the ride. Eden Dog-Sled and Dog-Cart Tours - Eden Dogsledding is the premier New England Dogsled Touring Center.  People love it all four seasons.  It is unique in that we have 75 acres in the midst of 3000 of protected Vermont wilderness. Learn how to mush with Jim Blair. Harness and hitch each dog on your team then take an exhilarating ride through scenic meadows and pristine and private Vermont woodlands.

 

Ice Skating - Jackson Arena - Stowe has an indoor ice skating rink, Jackson Arena, located in the heart of the village. Operating from early November through late March, the rink offers public skating daily and skate rentals. While a roof overhead and warm lobby area await you, the rink has open air sides, so dress warmly on cold days. Call 253-3721 for schedule.

 

More places to Ice Skate - Just north of Stowe, in Morrisville, is another indoor rink with public skate and stick time from June through February - CREW Arena. The Commodores Inn features a 3 1/2 acre lake for guests to skate on. The Golden Eagle Resort also offers ice skating on the resort's pond.

 

Ice Skate Rentals - Skate rentals are available at the Jackson Arena and the Ice Center of Washington West. Umiak Outfitters features ice skate rentals for only $3.50 per day.

 

Sleigh Rides - Edson Hill Manor - Available all winter long through snow-laden evergreen forests. Throw Blankets are provided for your comfort. Enjoy a romantic ride with your special loved one.

 

Sleigh Rides - Gentle Giants at Topnotch - One of New England’s most scenic and romantic rides.  Our Gentle Percheron and Belgian draft horses will await to pull you with their jingle bells ringing in a one or two horse open santa style sleigh with a curly dash. Enjoy a ride in our lovely new Romantic Sleigh for Couples. Sleighs are all beautifully lit with enchanting lights for our evening rides. Warm blankets welcome you. Families and groups are welcome. Sleigh Rides - Stowehof - 'Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh' becomes a reality at the Stowehof. Capture the spirit and romance of the Victorian era with a moonlit sleigh ride for two or four. Bring family and friends for an afternoon ride to see the beautiful views from our meadows. Sleigh rides run: 4pm to 9pm Monday through Friday. 2pm to 9pm Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are made at the Front Desk. Cancellations must be made by 12 noon the day of the ride.
